Raw Milk & Raw Kefir
Going back to real food — the whole, fresh, local milk our grandparents drank. Here's what's actually in the glass, and the two Yorkshire farms I get mine from.

I drink raw milk every day, and I get a delivery of raw milk kefir shipped to me every week. People always ask why — so here's the straight version. No hype: just whole, fresh, minimally-messed-with milk from farms I can actually name, dropped at my door here in Leeds.
What "raw" actually means
Raw milk is milk in its natural state — straight from grass-fed cows, chilled, bottled, and nothing else. It's unpasteurised (not heat-treated) and unhomogenised (the cream rises to the top, the way milk's meant to). It hasn't been split, standardised or rebuilt. What the cow made is what you pour.
The appeal is simple: it's a proper whole food with a face behind it. You know the farm, you know the herd, and the best of it goes from milking to your doorstep in well under a day.
What's actually in your glass
Whole, full-fat and unhomogenised means the fat-soluble vitamins come packaged with the fat that helps you absorb them — the way nature intended. For anyone training hard, it's a genuinely useful, nutrient-dense, real-food source of protein and calories.
The gut & the kefir
This is the bit I rate most. A huge slice of your immune system lives in your gut wall — so a happy, diverse gut microbiome is one of the best things you can look after. And that's exactly what fermented foods feed.
Raw milk kefir is raw milk fermented with live kefir grains — they call it the "champagne of dairy", and it's a proper living product (don't be surprised if it fizzes when you open it). It's loaded with billions of live cultures across dozens of strains — far more diverse than a shop yoghurt — and it's naturally lower in lactose because the fermentation eats it up. I have a glass most days and my digestion has never been better. It's the single easiest real-food habit I'd tell anyone to start with.
Where I get mine
Know your farmer. These are the two I use and rate — both family farms, both the real deal.
Family-run from Bradford, delivering raw milk, cream, butter, honey and eggs right across Yorkshire & Greater Manchester — Leeds included. Their thing is freshness: milking to your doorstep in under 12 hours. Order by Thursday 7pm for the weekend drop, £1.50 delivery.
farmfreshrawmilk.co.uk →A family farm since 1938, 100% A2 grass-fed herd, certified organic & Pasture for Life — they call it "probiotic farming, it starts with the soil." I get their raw A2 kefir bundle — 500ml × 7 bottles a week for £27.75, delivery included — shipped nationwide, restocked every Friday at noon. Properly made, properly traceable.
hillfarmrealfood.co.uk →How to get started
Buy from a registered farm you trust, keep it cold — it's a fresh, living product, so fridge it and drink it fresh (the kefir keeps about 20 days) — and ease in. Start with a glass of milk a day, or a glass of kefir, and see how your body responds. As with any real food, it comes down to quality and knowing your source.
A sensible note: if you're pregnant, very young, elderly or immune-compromised, have a quick word with your GP before adding raw dairy. For everyone else — enjoy it the way it was meant to be.
