Top 7 Chlorella Benefits
What the green stuff actually does for immunity, recovery and overall health.
✓ Reviewed & Updated — June 2026
2026 update: chlorella is still one of the better ‘green’ add-ons — but quality is everything. Look for broken-cell-wall chlorella that’s third-party tested for heavy metals (cheap algae can be contaminated). Treat it as a nutrient top-up alongside real food, not a detox miracle. The seven benefits below are still valid; it’s the expectations that need to stay realistic.
Looking for a nutrient-dense green to add to your day? Chlorella is a freshwater algae packed with protein, vitamins and minerals — here is what it is, what the research actually suggests, and how to keep your expectations realistic.
Native to Taiwan and Japan, this superfood is rich with phytonutrients, including amino acids, chlorophyll, beta-carotene, potassium, phosphorous, biotin, magnesium and the B-complex vitamins. Chlorella is a blue-green algae like its cousin spirulina, and we will compare the nutrients of these superfoods later in the article. Chlorella has been studied for a range of general-health effects — supporting a healthy immune response and cardiovascular markers, and blood pressure and cholesterol. It is best thought of as a concentrated green food, not a medicine. Chlorella’s rich green color comes from a high concentration of chlorophyll. We are all told to eat more leafy green vegetables for good health, but sometimes it can be difficult to get the 5–7 servings of vegetables a day recommended by nutritionists and doctors of functional medicine. While juicing is another option, it’s simply too time-consuming for most people. And frankly, most green leafy vegetables pale in comparison to the health benefits that chlorella can provide. By consuming organic, low-temperature-extracted chlorella supplements, you can receive all of the chlorella benefits in a simple powder or tablet form.Chlorella Nutrition Facts
As you’re about to see, chlorella is one of the most nutrient-dense superfoods in the world. A 1-ounce (3 tbsp) serving of chlorella contains:- Protein—16g
- Vitamin A—287% RDA
- Vitamin B2—71% RDA
- Vitamin B3—33% RDA
- Iron—202% RDA
- Magnesium—22% RDA

7 Reasons People Take Chlorella — and What the Evidence Shows
Here are the seven most common reasons people take chlorella, with what the research actually supports for each — including where it is thin or unproven. Chlorella is a food, not a treatment for any condition.1. Rich in Chlorophyll
Chlorella’s deep green colour comes from an unusually high concentration of chlorophyll — the pigment plants use to capture light, and one of the main reasons people reach for green foods in the first place. Chlorella is often marketed as a ‘detox’ supplement. The honest picture is that the human evidence for binding heavy metals is limited and early, so it is best not to rely on it for that. If you are worried about a specific exposure, speak to your doctor rather than a supplement. (1, 2)2. An Easy Way to Eat More Greens
Most of us are told to eat more leafy greens, but hitting five to seven servings a day is genuinely hard. Chlorella is one way to add a concentrated dose of greens to your day in powder or tablet form, on top of the vegetables already on your plate.3. Supports Your Immune System
Research published in 2012 in the Nutrition Journal found that after 8 weeks of chlorella intake, NK cell activity improved. Researchers from the Yonsei University in Seoul Korea studied healthy individuals and their immune system’s response to chlorella supplements. The results showed that chlorella supports a healthy immune system response and helps “natural killer” cell activity. (4)4. May Support Body Composition
Losing weight is difficult, especially as we age. In a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, researchers state, “Chlorella intake resulted in noticeable reductions in body fat percentage, serum total cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose levels.” (5) In this kind of research chlorella has been linked with better body-composition markers. As with any supplement, though, it works alongside a sensible diet and training — not instead of them. Any weight you lose ultimately comes from an overall energy deficit over time — no supplement shortcuts that.5. Antioxidants for Skin and Ageing
Chlorella is a source of antioxidants. A study published in the journal Clinical Laboratory reported that chlorella was associated with lower oxidative stress, which can come from pollution, stress and a poor diet. (6) Some of this is put down to chlorella being a source of vitamin A, vitamin C and glutathione, compounds involved in the body’s handling of free radicals. By just taking one teaspoon or a couple capsules daily of a chlorella supplement, you can see results in as little as two weeks.6. Antioxidant Support
Chlorella is rich in antioxidant compounds like chlorophyll, vitamin C and beta-carotene. Antioxidants are part of how the body copes with everyday oxidative stress from things like pollution, hard training and a busy lifestyle — a good reason to eat plenty of colourful plants in general, chlorella included.7. May Support Blood Sugar and Cholesterol
Type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol are two of the serious chronic conditions facing many Americans today. Years of improper eating, stress and a lack of sleep have led many to one or both of these diagnoses. In a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, participants taking 8,000 mg of chlorella per day (in two doses) showed lower cholesterol and blood glucose levels. Researchers observed a fall in cholesterol first, then an improvement in blood glucose, and suggested chlorella may influence genes involved in insulin sensitivity. Chlorella is a food supplement, not a detox or a medicine. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take regular medication, check with your GP or pharmacist before starting any supplement.
