Accessibility Statement

Pete Gawtry Fitness is a small, one-person business, not a public body, so the accessibility regulations written for government and public-sector websites don't formally apply here. We're publishing this statement anyway, because we want as many people as possible to be able to use this site comfortably, and because an honest account of where we actually stand is more useful to you than saying nothing.
Where we stand
We haven't commissioned a full accessibility audit of this site, so we can't honestly claim it meets any WCAG conformance level in full — and we'd rather tell you that plainly than make a claim we haven't checked. What follows is a straightforward description of what the site does today, what we know still needs work, and how to reach us if something doesn't work for you.
What this site does
- Every page is built with standard HTML — proper headings, lists and landmarks — rather than images or scripts standing in for real text.
- Every image we've checked carries descriptive alt text, not a blank tag or a filename.
- The site is designed mobile-first and works right down to a single-column phone screen; nothing depends on having a mouse.
- Interactive parts of the site — the menu, the FAQ accordions, the forms — are built from real HTML controls (buttons, expandable sections, labelled fields) rather than custom widgets a keyboard or screen reader can't reach.
- Form fields carry a proper on-screen label tied to the field, not just placeholder text that disappears the moment you start typing.
- We check important text and background colour combinations against the WCAG AA minimum contrast ratio (4.5:1) when we choose them.
- The Google map on the Contact page and in the footer only loads when you choose to tap it, rather than embedding automatically on every page — faster for everyone, and it doesn't drop an unexpected, hard-to-escape element into your keyboard tab order.
What we know still needs work
We'd rather you heard this from us than found it yourself:
- A "skip to content" link exists in our design system, but it isn't on every page yet — you'll find it on some pages (our workout plan pages, for example) and not others. We're working through adding it everywhere.
- The site uses one dark colour theme throughout, with no light or high-contrast alternative yet for anyone who finds that harder to read.
- Some hover-triggered menus and decorative animations haven't each been individually checked against a "reduce motion" preference, even though parts of the site do respect it.
- Our free downloadable guides and recipe books are PDF files, and we haven't checked whether every one of them is properly tagged for a screen reader.
- Molly, the chat assistant on this site, hasn't had a dedicated accessibility review.
- Some older blog posts go back several years and may not meet the same standard as pages we've built more recently.
Third-party content
Some parts of the site are run by other companies — payment pages hosted by Stripe, in-app purchases through Apple, and the embedded Google map. We can't directly control how accessible those are, but we choose established providers who publish their own accessibility information.
The coaching app
The Pete Gawtry Fitness coaching app (iPhone and web) is a separate product from this website and hasn't been assessed as part of this statement. If you hit an accessibility problem inside the app, the same contact details below apply.
Tell us if something isn't working
If you're having trouble using any part of this site — a page that doesn't make sense with a screen reader, text you can't resize, something you can't reach by keyboard, or anything else — please tell us. Email pete@pg-fitness.co.uk with the page you were on and what happened, and we'll look into it. We can't promise a fix by a fixed date, but we do read every message and act on it.
If you'd rather not email, you can call or WhatsApp 07415 248645.
